Estonian Transport Administration and Tax and Customs Board call for data to be checked before entry into force of motor vehicle tax

On 1 January 2025, the Motor Vehicle Tax Act will enter into force in Estonia. The Transport Administration and the Tax and Customs Board call for people to check the necessary data in the motor register and contact details in the e-service of the Tax and Customs Board (TCB) before the tax comes into force.

When the Motor Vehicle Tax Act was passed, an ‘annual tax’ to be collected by the TCB and a registration fee to be collected by the Transport Administration were established in Estonia.

The annual tax will be paid by owners of taxable motor vehicles every year on vehicles registered in the motor register. The Transport Administration provides the TCB with the basic data necessary for the calculation and collection of the annual tax, including general data of the owner and the authorised user of the motor vehicle, data for the identification of the motor vehicle and technical data of the motor vehicle. Read on the website of the TCB which categories of vehicles are subject to the tax.

The registration fee is payable before the first registration of passenger cars and vans in the motor register, i.e. the prerequisite for the registration entry is the payment of the registration fee. The registration fee must also be paid upon the first change of ownership of a vehicle already registered in the Estonian motor register, provided that no registration fee has been paid for that vehicle before.

What do vehicle owners need to do before the end of 2024?

  • Check the data of your vehicle in the motor register to make sure that the taxes will be calculated on the basis of correct data. If the data are not correct, be sure to notify the Transport Administration thereof by sending an e-mail to [email protected].
  • Check your contact details in the e-environment of the TCB. Correct contact details help issue the tax notice to the correct person, who can examine the amount and calculation procedure of the tax liability in the new year and pay it in a timely manner.

A motor vehicle tax calculator has been prepared in cooperation between the Transport Administration and the TCB. It allows each vehicle owner to calculate the amounts of the annual tax and registration fee for their vehicle on the basis of the registration plate or the technical data of the vehicle. The calculator can be found both on the website of the TCB and in the e-service of the Transport Administration. Due to the high number of visits to the sites, the calculator may be slower than usual at certain times. If this happens, it is worth trying again after a while.

Frequently asked questions about the registration fee can be found on the website of the Transport Administration and about the motor vehicle tax on the website of the TCB.
