Customs duty calculator helps calculate taxes applicable to goods ordered online

A new customs duty calculator is available on the website of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board (ETCB) to help Estonian residents calculate taxes applicable to goods ordered from countries outside the EU.

“Every year, during the so-called Black Friday Week, many in Estonia order goods from countries outside the EU without knowing exactly which taxes are applied to the goods ordered. The customs duty calculator makes it very easy and convenient to get an overview of the possible taxes applicable to the purchase,” said service owner Kaari Lainevool of the ETCB.

“While the goods the value of which does not exceed 150 euros are subject to VAT only, more expensive goods are also subject to customs duties. It is especially important to keep it in mind when ordering more expensive goods, where the rate of customs duty depends on the type of goods and the country of origin,” Lainevool added.

The customs duty calculator is intended primarily for people who order goods from online shops outside the EU. It is based on a list of goods ordered most often, such as electronic products, clothes, cosmetics and toys. Users only have to select the description of the goods, enter the price, transport cost, country of dispatch and currency, and the amount of duties is calculated automatically.

“We hope that this digital tool will help customers make better-informed purchasing decisions and avoid possible unexpected costs upon the arrival of goods,” said Lainevool.
