The memorandum of understanding signed between the heads of the Estonian and Kazakh customs authorities establishes a clear framework to support fair trade and enhance the supervisory capacities of both countries’ authorities in combating illegal trade.
According to Ursula Riimaa, Deputy Director General of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board for Customs, sanctions have created new supply chains and significantly increased the risk of violations. “This is why much closer communication between customs authorities is needed to ensure the smoothest possible movement of legitimate goods and to prevent potential violations,” Riimaa said.
Riimaa also noted that international trade is constantly changing. “The goal of the Tax and Customs Board is to provide better guidance to businesses on customs requirements, which in turn makes the transport of goods safer and more predictable for companies,” she explained.
