ETCB starts sending motor vehicle tax notifications

The Estonian Tax and Customs Board (ETCB) started sending notifications of motor vehicle tax (annual tax) to the contact details indicated in its e-services environment. The deadline for payment of the first instalment of the annual tax is 16 June this year.

Tax notices prepared based on the information in the motor register of the Transport Administration have been made available to vehicle owners or authorised users in the e-services environment e-MTA. The tax notices were drawn up on the basis of the data in the motor register on 1 January 2025. The amount of tax in the notice includes the annual tax for all the vehicles in the name of the owner or authorised user.

According to Madis Laas, Head of the ETCB's Income Tax Department, a quarter of motor vehicle tax payers have already looked at their tax notices in the e-services environment. “E-mail and text message notifications are sent to all taxable persons whose e-mail address or phone number is known to the ETCB – including to those who have already checked their tax notices in the e-services environment,” said Laas.

The ETCB notifies people of issued tax notices by e-mails and text messages, and later also on paper. As the motor vehicle tax is a new tax and the number of taxpayers is high, we ask you to be patient when signing into the e-services environment.

The first payment deadline is on June 16 this year, when at least 50% of the tax amount must be paid. The deadline for the second payment is 15 December 2025.

When the Motor Vehicle Tax Act was passed, the motor vehicle tax, i.e. the annual tax and registration fee, was introduced in Estonia. Each year, the ETCB collects the annual tax from the owners or authorised users of taxable motor vehicles registered in the motor register. More information on which categories of vehicles are subject to tax is available on the ETCB website. Answers to frequently asked questions can also be found on the same website. The registration fee is collected by the Transport Administration. More information of that is available on their website.

How is the annual tax paid?

  • After receiving the notification regarding motor vehicle tax, sign in to the e-services environment and download the tax notice.
  • Transfer money to your prepayment account in the e-services environment. In this way, your tax obligations will be fulfilled automatically. Transfers from the prepayment account are made on the basis of due dates for performing tax liabilities.
  • It is possible to pay the full amount of tax at once before 16 June.
  • You can also pay the tax by bank transfer. The account numbers of the ETCB and the reference number of the personal prepayment account can be found on the tax notice or in the notification letter.
