711 thousand, i.e. 97% of the submitted tax returns have been filed electronically. According to Annika Oja, service manager of the income and taxation of natural persons at the Tax and Customs Board, the number of tax returns submitted on paper is decreasing every year.
"To date, we have received about 5,000 paper returns less than last year. Compared to 2018, the number of paper returns has been halved," she added.
The amount of overpaid income tax to be refunded is 203 million euros whereas 63 million euros have to be paid additionally. Last year, a total of 762 352 income tax returns were submitted, so the Board is still waiting for an estimated 30,000 tax returns.
“However, every year there are also those who fail to fulfil their obligations. Currently, we have data on about 100,000 people, 80% of whom should be refunded by the state, but they have not submitted their tax returns, which is why we cannot pay the refunds,” Oja added.
The Tax and Customs Board began to refund the overpaid income tax from 28 February to those who submitted their income data electronically and from 17 March to those who submitted their tax returns on paper. The deadline for payment of additional income tax due is 2 October 2023.
