Reminder: we recommend checking vehicle information before the motor vehicle tax takes effect

On 1 January 2025, the Motor Vehicle Tax Act will enter into force. The Estonian Tax and Customs Board (ETCB) and the Estonian Transport Administration (ETA) remind vehicle owners to check their vehicle information in the motor register and contact details in the ETCB’s e-service before the end of the year.

With the adoption of the Motor Vehicle Tax Act, the motor vehicle tax, or so-called annual tax, which will be collected by the ETCB, and the registration fee, which will be collected by the ETA, were established in Estonia.

The annual tax will be paid annually by owners or authorised users of taxable motor vehicles registered in the motor register. Check the ETCB’s website to see which vehicle categories the tax applies to. The ETCB will get the basic data necessary for the calculation of the motor vehicle tax, including general data of the owner and the authorised user of the motor vehicle, from the motor register.

The registration fee is paid before the first registration of passenger cars and vans in the motor register. This means that payment of the registration fee is the prerequisite for registration. The registration fee must also be paid upon the first change of ownership of vehicles already registered in the Estonian motor register, provided that no registration fee has been paid earlier for this vehicle.

What will vehicle owners have to do before the end of 2024?

  • Check your vehicle information in the motor register so that the annual tax and registration fee are calculated based on the correct data. If the vehicle information is incorrect, be sure to notify by email at [email protected].
  • If possible, complete any transactions with the vehicle (such as change of ownership) before 1 January, when the motor vehicle tax takes effect. This can be done quickly in the Transport Administration's e-service, where operations can be performed conveniently and without leaving home.
  • Check your contact details in the ETCB’s e-services environment. The correct contact details help ensure that tax notices are issued to the right people who can then check the amount of the tax liability and its calculation, as well as pay the tax on time in the new year.

The ETCB will make the tax notice of the annual tax available in its e-services environment e-MTA by 15 February at the latest. For vehicles in the motor register on 1 January, the tax must be paid by 16 June and 15 December in 2025.

Frequently asked questions about the registration fee can be found on the ETA’s website and information about the so-called annual tax on the ETCB’s website.
