As of 15 June 2007 pursuant to the Regulation (EC) No 1889/2005 all travellers crossing the EU border with EUR 10 000 or more in cash must declare this sum to Customs. Obligation to declare cash is laid down with a view to deter crime and increase security through preventing money laundering and terrorism in the European Union.
Any person entering or leaving the European Union who carries:
must make a cash declaration and lodge it with the customs authorities at the control point through which the person enters or leaves the European Union.
In addition to EU rules there are separate provisions for control and declaration for intra community movements of cash in some Member States.
